Our background and why we exist

The mission

We are here to make radiology make sense.

Radiology can feel complex so we want to make high-quality visually appealing radiology education accessible to everyone in healthcare, wherever you are in the world.

My story

Hi! My name is Dr Naveen Sharma and I started this project back in March 2018 shortly after starting work as a Consultant Radiologist in the UK.

I went to medical school in London and then worked as a junior doctor on the wards for four years with the aim initially of being a physician. I somehow fell into radiology and took a radiology training post at a London teaching hospital which looking back was one of the best decisions I ever made.

During my time on the wards I found radiology quite daunting and I barely knew the difference between a knee and an elbow X-Ray. Without much teaching in radiology, starting radiology training was tough with a steep learning curve. During my training I realised how radiology could be taught with visual clear graphics and now one of the things I want to do is to help people around the world learn radiology. It’s not as daunting as you think once you’ve seen a bit, honest.

March 2018: The moment theradiologistpage was born

The journey so far

Back in March 2018 after 5 years of radiology training I had just become a Consultant Radiologist (’Attending’ in the US). I was on holiday with my wife (doctorbowl on Instagram btw) on a rooftop cafe in Marrakech and I decided to take the plunge and start an Instagram account teaching radiology. I always had an interest in creating graphics and videos so why not use that to teach radiology.

I went on to post consented cases and anatomy annotations as well as a load of memes to try and show radiologists weren’t the stereotypical grumpy basement gremlin I’d met during my times on the ward. Years later and the account has over 1 million followers and I’ve received hundreds of messages about how the account has helped people with real life cases and people have also decided to go into radiology as a career on the back of following theradiologistpage.

I then focused on building this website, and I have tried to make something I would have personally used before getting into radiology and during my radiology training. I mean sometimes I even look at my own annotations and X-Ray checklists as a little reminder so hopefully you will find it useful too!

Our Values

All the way from starting the Instagram account back in 2018 to now, these are the overarching principles that drive this project forward:

Clarity

We simplify complex ideas without losing any depth.

Every bit of content tries to break things down and make radiology more palatable and clear.

This means this can help you whether you’re just starting to look at scans or polishing your skills.

Excellence

We aim for excellence in everything we create.

That means from the accuracy of the teaching to the design of every graphic.

Each resource is built carefully with the intention of helping you reach your potential in interpreting scans and X-Rays.

Growth

We believe strongly in innovation not imitation. Every piece of content on theRadiologist is original and created from scratch.

We aim to do things that have not been done before and develop the already high standards of radiology education out there in the public domain.

Integrity

Everything we share is buit on respect – for patients, hospitals and the profession.

We are proud to say all clinical images used in the public domain are used with approval from the institution that created the X-Rays as well as written consent from the patient. We believe this is the right way forward for radiology education.
